Autumn goodness

Mom, His Pugness and I took a road trip last weekend to catch the rather muted Autumn colors. This is Smyrna, Maine.

His Pugness:

It's hard to get a good, spontaneous shot of a 19-pound dog, so I gave up.

Cute doggy. :D

It's been a long time since I've seen a traditional haystack; those rolled-up things seem to be the way they're all done now. Something to remember if one is ever describing a scene set in a pasture or something.

Well, they have the square bales, too, but you can get so much more in the round bales. Another thing you'll see is silage bales-- the ones that are the round, plastic-wrapped sort. These are for cow feed, easier to digest, I guess, because they are broken down partially before the cow gets to it.

(Cows digest the cellulose in plants with the symbiotic bacteria in their gut.)

See, now, I was thinking of them as hay stacks rather than bales. Do they still stack hay, then? Or do they just send a machine through, reaping and baling all at once and not bother stacking anymore?

I think they probably stack hay in Eastern Europe, but the round bales are dominant these days, from what I've seen. I've seen these round bales are all across the country.
